Scanning with VueScan - do scanner drivers need to be installed?

If I were to purchase a Canon Scanner and use VueScan, do I still need to load the Canon software or is the scanner automatically recognized merely by launching VueScan without the need to install any Canon Drivers?

I would prefer to not have to load any scanner drivers as they have always slowed down my machines and been buggy in the past.

VueScan contains its own drivers for all the scanners it supports. However, they only work in the VueScan application, so if you want to scan directly from Photoshop, iPhoto, ImageCapture or anything else, you have to install the manufacturer's own drivers.
