I am brand new to the Mac. Just bought a 17" Powerbook and lovin' it except I have to download this plug in from Macromedia called Authorware 7.0 and I can't do it. I has downloaded to my desktop but after that I am lost. I have tried to highlight it with the hope it might give me a clue as to what to do next, but to no avail. I am in a little bit of a panic; the work needs to be completed by midnight tomorrow and I need to get this done. Will appreciate any helpful assistance. THANKS

If you downloaded the trial, it appears to be a windows only trial. The file that downloaded for me had an .exe at the end. That means its a windows program.
When you buy/download Mac software it needs to have a .sit (like a zip) or .dmg (disk image). or an actual application.
The download trial also only specifies that its for windows and not the mac.

Sorry, but does macromedia come built in the Powerbook? I am a newbie at this. I downloaded the version that belonged to the Mac, it said right on it OS X. It should work. Is there anything need to do to activate what I have downloaded? Are you saying that I have to download Shockwave in order to be able to install Authorware? Thanks

Let's start here.
What file extension does the file have that you downloaded?
If it is ".sit" or ".sitx" or possibly even ".bin" or ".hqx" you may need to download Stuffit Expander ( http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/download3.html) first to uncompress the file.
OS X used to come with Expander already installed, but Tiger (10.4) put an end to that.

Thanks, I will give it a try. If i am able to open this with stuffit, will the computer know it is there and be able to use it when necessary? Do I have to do anything else?

You would have to describe your problem better. It's unclear which file you downloaded (give a link to the site where you downloaded and the URL of the file) and it is unclear what problem you encounter when you try to install. Give as much details as possible. How is the file on the desktop called, what icon does it have, what did you do to try installing it, what are the messages you get from your computer etc.
