Hi, does anyone know of a good piece of software (preferably freeware) that can sync certain folders on my two macs either over the internet or over my wireless network?

Cheers

I don't know of freeware (I think rsync can do this over a network, but it's complicated), but Chronosync can do this (also over a network - that is, one HD must be mounted on the other computer. The type of network doesn't really matter.)

You could do this with a dotmac account but again, that isn't free. Have you searched Macupdate or versiontracker?

I have a friend that swears by Chronosync plus it seems to be a good backup app as well. That dev makes some nice looking software.

ChronoSync truly is great. Updates are free forever, and the GUI makes things very easy and straightforward to do.

I paid for it, and I'm glad I supported the developer -- it's a very useful application.

Well, you could use your iDisk, which would be synched on a couple machines.

ChronoSync is a better/faster solution, though. .Mac is best for less data that changes less often, but you do get an offsite backup with it.

I use ChronoSync -- I echo the recommendations of others. Other people have reported good luck with SuperDuper, which isn't free, I don't believe.

Doesn't Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware) also have a syncing component?

If you have ssh enabled on your macs and are comfortable w/ terminal you can do this
using rsync. If you need to sync files that might have data forks, you need to use 10.4
or download RsyncX.

I've used rsync to sync directories between my iBook and my G5. I usually do something
like:

$ cd [dir I want to sync from]
$ rsync -e ssh -avpzCE --delete -n ./ me@my-g5:[dir to be sync'ed]

It will prompt you for your password (unless you setup ssh to not do that). This gives
you a list of the files that will be sync'ed. If it looks okay, remove the -n option and
run the command again to actually sync the files.

The -E option only exists on 10.4 and allows data fork sync'ing.

If you have bought Toast, you might be able to use DejaVu which comes bundled w/
it for free to sync directories as well.

HTH,

--ranga
