I have upgraded to OSX 3.2 and am enjoying the experience except for e-mail. Mac mail will not send attachments. I have visited numerous sites where this problem is discussed and no one has a definitive answer. I had the same problem at home where I use a cable DSL, and their suggestion of changing the outgoing mail port from 25 to 187 worked. The high speed telephone system here at work has not been so easy. Is this a Microsoft shortcoming or what? I have no problem sending attachments via Outlook express (OS 9), but I would like to eliminate classic applications altogether. The only suggestions I have heard include upgrading to OS X 4, or wait untill the software geniuses actually test their software before releasing it.

Did you try updating to 10.3.9 to see if that helps?

It's a matter of principle now. Would you upgrade to a Caddy if your Chev was a lemon?

How are you connected to the internet? Microsoft shotcoming? How are they involved in this? Have you checked the port settings in Outlook Express? What does Mail say when it doesn't want to send attachments?
And upgrades tend to contain bug fixes which is why upgrading to 10.3.9 might help. There is a long way from 10.3.2 to 10.3.9 - why have you just upgraded to 10.3.2 now?

Outlook express works fine...the outgoing mail is routed via port 25. When configuring Macmail, I kept the same settings, which worked except for attachments. Interesting enough, a collegue using Windows had a similar problem with attachments, but it seemed to fix itself. A number of forums discuss the problem with solutions ranging from keep re-sending until it goes through, change all of your encoding settings, etc. All of these solutions treat the symptoms, not the disease. If the creators of MacMail are unable to provide compatability with the rest of the world, why not try another field of work?
I upgraded to OSX only because my computer died and the replacement came with OSX. Classic versions run just fine, and in some cases, better. Appleworks, for instance, works no better than Clarisworks, which came out 20 years ago.

Perhaps it's your network (or mail server in this case) that isn't compatible with the rest of the world
Apple has released 11 updates since 10.3.2 and if it's a bug in Mail, it could very well be fixed.

But why haven't you updated since 10.3.2?

Problem solved: my router's MTU setting was disabled.(maximum transfer unit). Enabling it and setting to 1450 solved the problem. Even when enabled, if set too high, attachments will time out. Not sure if this is a problem with OSX only.

1450 is an odd number - 1500 would seem more normal.

Setting it to 1500 can sometimes cause problems. (Or rather: decreasing it can solve problems )

It works at 1450, so I won't tempt fate. How come nobody else had this problem? Apparently it's not an issue with Windows software or programs running in Classic, but any e-mail program running in OSX is affected.
