are Thunderbird profiles portable across platforms?

does anyone know if one can take the directory of a Thunderbird profile on Windows and simply transfer that to a Mac, and visa versa? In otherwords, are Tbird profiles fully portable between computers and platforms, with no importing or exporting required?
