I think just the player is free. That's the option that used to be $10. Now it should play the whole video instead of the first half (if I'm understanding correctly).

It does feel like a Microsoft product now... given that it's become much more unstable than it used to be. Crashes both QuickTime Player and iMovie...

Crashed my Safari. Secret MS code must have slipped into the 2.0 release.

Great news. I'm glad to see Microsoft are finally doing something nice for a change. Flip4Mac is great software and this version seems to support avi containers.

My guess is they cut some kind of co-branding deal. Only the basic player seems to be free; you still have to buy the other versions from Flip4Mac.

Does this mean that WiMP is dead on the Mac?

Probably...leave it to MS to take the easy way out.

Safari is out...we'll just stop IE dev for Mac.
Flip4Mac is pretty good and works in QuickTime? We'll just stop WiMP dev on Mac (or what little of it)
Apple released a spreadsheet today? We won't sign that 5 year contract anymore. (ok, this one didn't happen...but I'd imagine it would if Apple was planning to release a spreadsheet app.)

To me, this really sounds like MS had no updates to WiMP in the pipelines. They wouldn't have cut this deal if they had something interesting to give us.

Well Ho's department (Mac Business Unit) doesn't work on Mac WMP, so there's no reason for her to mention it.

Flip4Mac posted in their forums that they are aware of the QT 7.0.4 conflict and will have a fix shortly.

Systems without QuickTime 7.0.4 seem to be faring well with the new plugin.

It's a shame people are going to be given a bad impression of this plug-in because of this as the version 1.0.x was extremely good.

Where did they post this? I did a search of their forums, and all I could find were a bunch of threads where someone said it was crashing, and they just told him to repair permissions.

From what I've read on Arstechnica, it's the QT update that fub with something in F4M 2.0 version. They weren't expecting an update to QT so soon(?) or didn't think it would mess with it. Reverting back to the pervious version of quicktime will resolve the problem. Although some users did report that the problem remained.

They kindly added the option to save a wmv from within the browser window like QT pro (yay!). Good company and they listen to their users requests. I'm using this to convert all wmv to another format. MS

am running it with 10.4.4, and quicktime pro 7.0.4, and no problems (so far...)

I, too, am experiencing the QT 7.0.4 conflict. I had to uninstall it, even though it's the coolest free thing out of Macworld. It crashes any app that uses QuickTime any time the app attempts to unload a QT viewer.

When I specidy in the finder to open wmv files with quicktime I get a generic blank document icon instead of a QuickTime file icon with WMV in it. What gives ? Is this normal ?

Yes, because QuickTime Player doesn't know anything about WMV files and has no idea that it can now open them.

They included a little workaround with Flip4Mac - set the default app for WMV files to "WMV Player" and that will make the icon look normal, and when you double-click the WMV file, it'll get passed right along to QT Player.

I may be wrong with this but when you specify that quicktime opens .wmv files it looks in its .plist file and there are a lot of file extension settings in there along with which .icns file to display in finder.
Since there is no .wmv icon nor setting in the .plist file it displays the blank icon.

I found flip4mac a while ago and started playing around with the .plist. My plan was to add the .wmv extension into an existing setting. one of the icons says "movie" on a quicktime icon.

I guess with the new Quicktime update my .plist file was replaced. When i get home from work i'll see if i can get it working and i'll share my findings.

That is correct, but again, if you set the default app for .wmv to the "WMV Player" app that comes with Flip4Mac, it is functionally equivalent to having an icon for WMV files inside QT Player's .plist.

Do a get info on a wmv file. Click on the "open with" triangle. Then select wmv player.app. (This is in the Flip4Mac folder in applications).

It will change the wmv icon to a QT version.

Seems to work great with QT 7.04. Really like being able to FF and RR quickly now. WMP just sucks at that.

Still can't play .asx files. This is a file that a local radio show uses to broadcast their shows live.

I don't get it, Flip4Mac is totally out of sync. I have this White Stripes video and by the end the lip sync is waaaay off, by seconds.

Here's a direct link to the file in question

Is flip4mac compatible with Intel? Don't they have to recompile to optimize it for intel?
