I'm trying to export a sound file in Quicktime Pro to MP3 or AAC. Specifically, I'm trying to go from WMA to MP3 or AAC within Quicktime and by way of Flip4Mac. I can export sound right now in this way; the problem is the only export option is to an uncompressed format such as AIFF or AU. I don't see why Quicktime Pro fails to offer an MP3 or AAC option, but I imagine the software is crippled to promote sales of Apple's professional audio software. So does anyone know how to enable sound to MP3 or AAC encoding in Quicktime Pro? Failing that, does anyone have an alternate path to accomplish what I wish?

You can't export to MPEG-4? It should be right there in the Quicktime export dialog box.

Thank you for replying. What you describe that can be done if you want video files, but I'm talking only about audio files that I wish to have on my iPod. That's why I need MP3 or AAC.

Use QuickTime to export as AIFF. Use iTunes to convert AIFF to AAC?

Yeah, that's the only thing I could come up with, and I don't like having to save an already compressed file in a huge uncompressed intermediate only to compress it again. I wouldn't mind as much if the files were small, but they're long audio tracks. I was just hoping there was a direct route.

Am I missing something here? Isn't m4a files just mp4 files with a different extension? Can't you press the "options"-button and select not to encode video?
Let me translate that. "VideospÄr" means video-track, next to that "Inget" means none.
The result is an mp4 file with audio only.
Edit: In theory anyway since I can't get it to encode directly to MP4 properly
Anyway, an optional solution is to encode to mov with AAC then encode to MP4 with passthrough.
There's also an MP3 Quicktime encoder based on LAME that you might like to check out (though it hasn't been updated for ages).

If that's the case, you've taught me something truly great, Jacke! I'll give it a try ASAP and report back.
