So I already ordered my macbook pro, but have been thinking about cancelling my order. I know all software within the next few years will b nativey supported, and for now everything will "work" under roselette, but no t be near as fast as it should. My question is, how do you know if you are running a universa binary of the software or not? When I get my MBP (if I don' cancel the order) I would like to just plug it in via firewire to my external but bootable HD and have it go through setup asistant and transfer programs etc, but will that be possible. I use photoshop religiously, but I guess could be swayed to aperture if it offered native support. I guess I just find this unversal binary thing confusing, will I have o download all new software, is the software that comes preloaded on the MBP all universa binaries or is running in the virtual environment?

Sorry for the essay just kind of confused on the whole thing.

Like will quicken 2004 work or do I need to purchase the new program, office?

Activity Monitor will tell you, and you can also see it by doing a Get Info on an app.

I don't see why it shouldn't

Everything included with the MacBook Pro is Universal.

Theres not really any need to cancel the macbook. All newly revved macs are going to be intel now, so 1) most apps will e universal by mid way through the year, and as all macs will be intel by december, it would make sense for the software to all be universal by then. If you go and buy a PPC laptop (powerbook or ibook), you will suffer much reduced speed from the macbook pro.

My point is, if you need a laptop, theres no reason you should cancel your order for your macbook, because there is no alternitive, and within the year all (i guess) will be universal, and running nativly on intel.

You SHOULDN'T notice anything different.... that being said, there will be a handful of applications that do not work (I'm guessing NONE of the major applications). We will see in the near future just how seamless the transition is.

It all depends upon the applications you use. If you use your system mostly for surfing, emailing, etc. etc. you should be fine.

well, photoshop and Nikon Capture every single day. Adobe illustrator every couple, quicken every day, Office every day, so I am starting to get a bit worried here.

It seems that Photoshop runs very well in Rosetta:

Office will be getting an update in a few months. Photoshop (and I assume the rest of the Creative Suit) will run, don't know what the speed will be like. Apple's Pro apps will be updated in a few months. Nikon Capture I have no idea. Everything that ships with the MacBook Pro will be Universal.

You won't regret your purchase by the end of the year I bet.
