I haven't used iPhoto in ages. in fact, I'm not sure I've ever used it in this Mac (G5 running 10.3.9)

However, I recently had reason to want to experiment with it, and I can't get it to work at all. It opens OK, showing no pictures in any part of the library. But, when I go to try to import some pictures from files, it starts to think briefly and then crashes. This happens consistently regardless of how many pix, how big the files are or how many I'm trying to import. Also, it refuses to recognize any of my cameras even though they have a valid USB connection (other apps can see them) and they are definitely supported brands/models.

I've tried the obvious kinds of fixes, like deleting the prefs file, repairing permissions, etc. In fact I even trashed the program and re-installed it from the system disk using Pacifist. (We're talking iPhoto4, updated to 4.0.3.) None of these changed anything.

The next most obvious possibility is that this is somehow caused by a conflict with the other photo software I have installed (iView Media Pro, Cannon Camera Window & Image Browser), but I really don't want to get into de-installing those since I only wanted to play around a little with iPhoto.

Anyone have any other ideas?
