Don't - I think that this is a poor implementation in the Mail program. I learned this the hard way when my elderly grandfather did the same thing, only he lived 1000 miles away and was describing what he saw to me over the phone. I didn't believe that it was possible to get to that state, and it took me 3 hours to realize what had happened.
