help i am a mac dummy. my grandfather has an old powermac g3 tower and he asked me to help him install mac os x because he needs it for the latest version of turbo tax.

i called my friend who is supposedly a mac expert and he recommended doing an archive and install. well, it didn't work!! it kept kernel panicking! so my friend then told me to back up his data and do a clean install.

so after the clean install, everything went well, no kernel panics, i resinstalled an os 9 folder so he can use classic, and i restored the data back onto the computer.

now the problem is his outlook info is no longer linked! i know the data is in there somewhere, but when i try to open up outlook it's as if i'm setting up a new account!

my grandpa is pissed!! how do i save his contacts and old emails?! i'm no os x expert, and i am definitely not an os 9 expert! my friend who is the supposed expert has no clue on how to help me! he's not an expert so he referred me to you guys here!

thanks

Well, what PowerMac does your grandfather have and what version of OS X were you trying to install?

If you don't know the details, just describe the case to us …

hi!

sorry i just got some more details.

he owns a powermac 400 (around there) mhz tower.

1. Tiger is currently installed
2. OS 9 Classic is currently installed
3. His old data is sitting inside a folder called 'back up'
4. When i open outlook, os 9 lauches, and then outlook looks like a brand new setup screen. all his contacts and data is nowhere to be found.
5. The main thing is I need to somehow reimport all of his old outlook information, but i don't know where to find it!

thanks so much!

Well, you have moved the folder where Outlook expects the information to be.

So I would suggest one of two possible solutions: 1. Install Office for OS X and import Outlooks data to Entourage (the successor to Outlook).

The next solution is for free. In the end, your grandfather will use Apple's Mail which is now the standard application on OS X.
2. Download Thunderbird for OS X (Mozilla's e-mail client, download it from www.mozilla.org). Then use Thunderbirds import function to transfer your e-mails from Outlook to Thunderbird. Then you can export the e-mails from Thunderbird to OS X's Mail.

but do you know what folder i have to look for? that is the main problem i am having. i don't know which exact folder i need to choose for importing.

my friend suggested the system folder but i couldn't find anything in there that would import contacts.

Nope, it's been years since I have seriously used OS 9 for anything. And even then, I have used MailSmith,

thanks so much oreo, the entourage idea did the trick. it looks like the magic folder was the 'microsoft user data' folder. it did'nt do anything with outlook/os 9/classic but it imported directly into entourage and then i opened up mac mail and reimported again. everything is there! thanks again for the help, now the only problem is gramps is complaining that OS X is too slow! >

You're welcome

now the only problem is gramps is complaining that OS X is too slow!
Well, maybe he should look into a new iMac or a Mac mini then

Anyway, if all he does is e-mail and surf the web, the machine should be ok as long as it has enough RAM (512+ MB would be ideal).
