I've started using my Powerbook at work, but most of the other techies in the office are still using Windows. We started noticing that emails I send using Mail end up with extra spaces every 70 characters or less.

So I'm guessing that somewhere along the line (either from Mail itself or in the mail server), the lines are getting broken up at a 70 character limit. Thunderbird apparently tries to paste the lines together so that it fills up the whole page and the result is extra spaces between words. This is also very inconvenient for URLs that are longer than 70 characters.

Is this a Mail setting, or possibly a mail server setting?

It's because Mail.app implements the "delsp=yes" option in the standard for email, an option that no one else uses (yet?).

You can read about it more here and see three work-arounds in the "Related Posts" section.

Mm ... the workarounds seem to be about preventing the URL from breaking up, but don't address the extra spaces in hte midst of text. Is there any way to turn off the delsp option? Or will that even solve the problem?

I think right now I'm just going to switch to Rich Text format for e-mails. That at least doesn't put those annoying spaces in the email.
