It's been getting slower and slower. It now takes about 20 seconds for the characters to show up when I am typing. If I try to switch from 1 document to another, it does the same thing. I get delays in scrolling, delays in highlighting, delays in the menu bar responsiveness (i.e., trying to change the font invariable results in me getting American Typewritter 50% of the time when all I EVER want is Times), ah yeah, pasting text from another document hardly ever comes in as Times.

Problem is that it is still the most intuitive, reliable program out there. Everytime I say I've had enough and I'm switching to M$ Word, it will crash and remind me why I love AppleWorks. Dammit, I love this program, but it's becomming so slow that it's effecting my productivity (and yes, I am blaming AW for wasting another 5 minutes of my time to post this rant).

PLEASE MAKE THIS PROGRAM MORE RESPONSIVE!!!

Is there anything I do to make this quicker?

btw, all I do is word processing, so Pages is out. Also, I am running a 1.5 GHz AiBook with 1.5 GB ram, so this should not be happening!!!

is this hapening with any other programs you use
if not try reinstalling if you still have the cd

It's misearble. The delay is significant (and even more so for me b/c I make so many typos and I have to wait for it appear before I make corrections).

It's like I'll type and it's all being cached, then there's this lag, and then it spits it all out REALLY fast. If I didn't care about it slowing me down so much, it might be a cool thing to watch.

Last thing I want to do is reinstall anything (I got my custom starting points, etc... but I may have to. I mean there are some known problems that have existed for an uncharacteristically looong time, no? For example, the "Open Recent" hasn't worked for the past 8 years (if ever) IIRC.

Try deleting the cache folder for the list of recent documents.

I'm curious - if all you do is word processing, why is Pages out of the question... it is a word processing/desktop publishing application, afterall?

Also, there are other alternatives:

Nisus Writer Express and Mariner Write are WP only apps, NeoOffice is a free open source Office replacement (very stable and easier to use than Word in some respects, harder in others, the same in others).

Let's start with the obvious: are you running Appleworks 6.2.9?
What Mac OS X version?
How big are your documents, e.g. a dozen, or hundreds of pages?
Do you have "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" turned off in Preferences?
What "Text" "Options" do you have set in Preferences? Fractional Character Widths? Font Smoothing?
Do you have auto-save turned on?
Have you trashed your preferences?
Are you using the Unsanity Haxie Silk (if yes, are you using the latest version)?

First test in that case:
ActivityMonitor: Check whats eating your performance, disk activity, memory etc. If it really is AppleWorks ok. If its something else, kill it first and see what happens.

This has happened to me and I solved it several years ago (after reading about the fix on either this or the Apple web site). You probably have hundreds, if not thousands, of files in the "recent documents" part. There are copies there (probably) of EVERYTHING you've ever done in AppleWorks. My program was so slow at one point that I could type away and nothing would show up for many seconds. It was pretty unusable.

I can't remember where the recent documents are stored, but find them, delete them (empty trash, too, of course) and then set your preferences so it doesn't create another document. Or, if you like having that feature, remember to delete every month or son.

I can almost guarantee that this is your problem.

Do you have a loaded gun so you can shoot AppleWorks and put it out of its misery?
I quit using AW after the abomination that was version 6 was released.

All this and you almost can't take AW anymore? What would have to happen for you to completely not be able to take AW? It kicks you in the crotch upon launch?
