hello all,
i was planning on doing some system maintenance w/ techtool deluxe yesterday but when i tried to boot from the cd (holding down the "c" key during a resart) i just kept getting a message telling me that i had to restart the computer...
since this disc was being borrowed from my sister, i figured that she may have had a diffent os or something, so a friend loaned me a copy of norton system works, but i'm getting the same message when trying to boot from this cd, too...
what gives?
i'm running os 10.4.4 on a 15 powerbook and trying to use techtool deluxe which says its good for 10.1 or later and norton system works 3.0...
thx in advance

How old is the PowerBook? What OS did it ship with? Was the disc you borrowed from your sister a disc that came with her computer? If it's not a retail copy of OS X, it's probably only meant to boot her computer (if it's not a PB like yours). Or your PB might be too new to run on an older copy of OS X (I believe this can happen, but I'm not sure).

the powerbook is barely a year old, shipped w/ and currently has os 10.4.4... the copy of techtool is one of those applecare protection plan cds, so it may be the former issue which you mentioned, however the copy of norton system works was a retail copy so i would assume it would work, but i get the exact same message when tyring to boot from it as well...

Do not assume. Often, newer Macs will not be bootable on software written for an older Mac. If the boot partition on the Norton CD, even if it was bought at retail, is too old, it will fail to boot. The people who make Disk Warrior often update their CDs (and post instructions on how to update and reburn an older version). Don't know about Norton.
But, on the other hand, this may be a blessing in disguise. Never, ever let a Norton product touch your Mac. Ever.
