i've managed to add a music track to my timeline but it seems to have clicks/artefacts when the whole project is played.

whats goin on??

-ps. these artefacts are not in the original track

You are using an MP3 or AAC. Convert it to AIFF in iTunes before importing it to FCP. Stupid, I know. (Then again, ideally you shouldn't use compressed sound in your projects anyway).
