I have noticed that mpeg files I play in Quicktime don't seem to have any sound. I have verified this is no hardware problem, various other applications using sound have no problems whatsoever. Nor is it a problem with the files themselves as I can play the same Mpeg files in VLC and enjoy perfect audio.

Now I've checked all the embarrassing obvious things it could be (like having mute on) and can't seem to identify the problem. I first had the problem with sound whilst using a game which intially led me to assume that was the culprit but discovered quicktime itself was sufferring later. The game in question was Starcraft which had been running perfectly for about a week until it began to inexplicably freeze during briefing sequences after a new phase was reached. I attempted a reinstall and later installed a general patch. This seem to solve some of the problems (no freezing) but sound was still totally absent from the game in general and again no embarrassing mute settings are activated.

Resets and reinstalls of both the game and quicktime have achieved nothing. I'm running 10.4.4 (quicktime is 7.04 I believe). The same game runs perfectly on my old pbook using 10.2.8 with no audio problems. Any glaring problems I've missed or a few suggestions?

If you have Garageband, launch it once and it should fix the problem. If you don't or it doesn't fix it, it can also be fixed in Audio-MIDI-Setup I think, but I would first have to Google for the procedure.

Wow, that sorted it right out, thanks.

Having never even used garageband (with no intention to either) and having not even updated it seeing as I won't be using it, I would never have thought of doing that.

The fact that it seemed to happen arbitrarily is a puzzle though.
