somtimes when i download somthing such as a mac game the picture which shows what format the download is, say an installer, is just a blank page. what does this mean and how do you enable the use of it. thanks

Are you talking about the icon that you see in the Finder or browser after you download the file? You can use Finder's File->Get Info to see what the file type is.

Some older downloads need to be uncompressed with Stuffit Expander. It's a free download if you don't already have it.
