This has been happening intermittently since. I upgrade to Tiger several months ago.

Mail refuses to quit or even force quit. Occaisionally this doesn't allow me to shut down the computer.

The quit mail option from the drop down menu shows grey(not clickable) and if I click and hold the dock icon force quit shows but does noy respond.

It's a pain and has just happened again.

You can always open a terminal window and type "killall Mail"

And that should do it. If not, bring out the BIG guns:

"sudo killall -9 Mail"

And that will do it :-)

I am not familiar with either terminal or ....sudo?

However I was able to quit mail by using alt-command-esc and selecting mail then force quitting.

I had this problem not too long ago, and I tried a few things to remedy the problem (and unfortunately, the "kill" command doesn't work). From what I understand, however, it is a font issue. Yes, a single missing font appears to render Mail completely useless (have you noticed that you can't send or receive mail as well?). The culprit tends to be HelveticaNeue, found in the /Library/Fonts folder. The font is either missing or corrupt. If you are using a 3rd part font manager to manage your fonts, make sure that you haven't deactivated this font.

No I haven't. As far as I'm aware I haven't had a problem with sending or receiving mail, and I use email quite alot.
