HI there

I already have a version of DIVx installed but ive just noticed in Quicktime/show properties menu that the file only has an generic Mpeg-4 listed in the video track but doesnt specify an audio/sound file. This is the problem right - an audio file doesnt exist os is it apart of the mpeg-4?

thanks

Some mpeg-4 movies are muxed in a mp4 container but the audio track would still show up. If the movie has AC3 audio, Quicktime will say there is no audio when there actually is. It does this with VOB files too. VLC should work.

Yeah, I would say its a Divx file with AC3 audio. Quicktime currently doesn't support AC3 audio playback. You can still watch the file, you'll just need to use either mplayer or VLC (I prefer VLC).

...and if you really want to use Quicktime, then there is an AC3 codec that you would need:

How do you know the file even has sound?

There are a few video codecs that VLC won't play, but it pretty much plays any audio out there. I'd say either the file has no audio to start with, or it is corrupt beyond recognition.

The last resort is usually MPlayer OS X 2. If you open the console, it will tell you all the details of the media and what audio codec is being requested. If it says no audio then there is no audio in the file.

If it should have audio and you suspect a corrupt file, you may have some success with an application called d-vision. It has some avi fixing tools.

It might not be an AC3 audio track, it may be a WMA audio track, I had this problem with some AVI files I had before, until I got DivXWMAConverter, which converts AVI files with a WMA or AC3 audio codec to a mp3 audio codec

So.

What would you say if an .avi plays in VLC with audio, but then ffmpeg has drop out errors, and stops playing ?

The kicker: DiVX 6 installed, but QuickTime plays no audio, but shows MPEG Layer 3 as the format, but no duration? Same with the beta DiVX Player.

AC3 component installed before/after. No difference. Tried the 3ivx component as well. Anyone have a flawless working solution?

Try a video & audio passthrough to a new AVI with ffmpegX.

Meh, I just went and bought stuff on iTunes:

faster, better quality, streams to PowerBook perfectly (to output to TV).

Ah.
