I'm using Apple's 10.4.4 Mail.app and have recently noticed that messages put in Mail's trash are no longer visible you click on 'Trash'. The trashed messages are still available as emlx files in
~/Library/Mail/acount_name/DeletedMessages/Messages
and when I ask Mail to empty its trash those files disappear in the Finder so the actual mail files are still around. But obviously Mail has chosen to not allow me to view them anymore.

The most obvious attempt at solving the problem would probably be to rebuild Trash, but for some strange reason I can't select 'Rebuild' when I've selected 'Trash'. I've tried setting up a new account, no dice. I've trashed prefs, no dice.

Has anybody else seen that happen? Is there a fix or work-around?

You could try simply deleting the 'Deleted Messages' folder in the Finder. It will probably be recreated the next time Mail is started. This, of course, will lose all the messages held within that folder. This approach worked for me recently when the Junk folder was doing the same thing as you are describing for the Trash.

Thanks!

That seems to have done the trick. Fore the moment at least everything is working fine again. Knock on wood.
