If you're not a heavy user of fonts (say you've bought maybe a handful of them, enough to count on one hand), are the font manangement or cleanup tools useful? They seem bloody expensive, but do they do anything more than Font Book's checking utility?

I have some insane crashes in GoLive CS2, the only application on my machine exhibiting any trouble. People on the Adobe forum keep jamming these system utilities down our throats, but I'm not so sure... only GLCS2 has a problem, everything else (PSCS2, Fireworks, MS Office) runs perfectly.

So what's the deal - does a guy like me need to plunk down $100 for a font utility?

For less than five fonts? There's absolutely no reason to have a font management tool. Just installing it would take longer than managing four fonts by hand. If GoLive is having problems, it's likely a problem with GoLive, not with font management.

are you sure it is your fonts? First thing I would do is remove them and see if the problem vanishes. If not, try re-installing go live, or post your problem here.

I wouldn't use a Font Management program with less than a say a hundred fonts. Even Fontbook could handle that though.

If you do install Fontagent Pro (for example) do you need to uninstall FontBook?

No, FontBook only offers manual font management. Meaning it's not going to autoactivate a font you've disabled using another app. It is, in my experience, the only (easy) way to disable System fonts.

I've been using FontExplorerX and it's fairly decent. I have had it miss activating a few fonts that I do have, and it insisted I didn't. Even an active one. One of the asian fonts, I believe. Still well worth a try at the price, though.

Thanks guys, it really does seem like overkill.

I'm not sure whether or not its my fonts, but these insane crashes (opening files, closing files, etc.) only started recently. I figure it has to be something decay-related or else it would have happened all along...?

Have you tried trashing the preferences?

This seems to be an Application's problem, moving …
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
