I'm pretty new to this forum, and I haven't had my mac very long either.
A few days ago, I used Photoshop to work on some photos and then convert them to jpegs. Usually there is a long list of options available for saving a file, including jpegs, tiffs, and many others.
Yesterday I ran a long list of updates for my computer. Today, when I tried to save some more photos as jpegs in Photoshop, that option is no longer available. The list is greatly reduced, and some of my most-used options have disappeared.

I am using a student edition of CS2. Could the updates have altered my Photoshop application?
If not, what could be the cause of this problem, and how can I fix it?

And by the way, is it a good idea to automatically run these updates, or are there some I should avoid? If so, how can I tell the good from the bad?

Finally, I took a screen shot of the altered Photoshop dialog box so I could post it too, but am not sure how to do this. I was prompted to enter the URL, and I don't know how to determine what it is. Thanks

I am such a dummy! I discovered the Photoshop malfunction was totally unrelated to the updates, and wasn't really a malfunction at all, but merely one of the mysteries of Photoshops unplumb-able depths!
However, I'd still like to know what you think about the updates.

Photoshop isn't broken. You're either trying to save 16-bit, layered, or CMYK files. Not all formats are compatible with those. In the save dialog, check "Save as a copy" and you'll be able to save in any format you like.
If you have layers, it's only possible to save as Photoshop format or TIFF unless you either flatten the image or do the above "Save as a copy." That's the most likely situation. If, in your layers pallette you see anything other than "background" listed, then you have layers.
