Hi,

I have a 20" 2GHz Intel Core Duo.
Loaded with 2GB's of Ram.
Yes it's the brand new honey from Apple!
However, I've been experiencing lots of problems with several apps.

iMovie 6...when importing video thru firewire, I get no audio.
In iMovie 4 & 5, I always had audio while importing.
Also, during editing, sometimes while playing back a selected clip, there is no video.
Stopping and replaying the clip does not fix this problem, the only way to fix this is, to quit iMovie 6, then restart the app. Sometimes the audio disappears too during playback in the timeline.

Another concern is distortion introduced playback of Audio CD's in iTunes 6.
Playing back a CD, I hear distortion. Stopping the track and restarting it, there is no distortion, this happened on many tracks, and was audiable thru headphones, as well as speakers, when I switched from one to the other.

Has anyone else experienced these problems?
I Love macs, always have, always will, however I can't help but feel frustration at attempting to get work done, when all it does is make me feel like I'm working on a bloody PC.

I feel for you! Contact Apple about your problems, and consider exchanging your Intel iMac for a G5 iMac or Powermac or something while Apple sorts out its Intel issues. I think the PPC really was an awesome chip, and Apple's engineers knew it inside and out.

I wonder, actually, how sound works on an Intel Mac. The normal Macs process sound right in the CPU, whereas Intel PCs have always used sound cards.

I have been having some serious problems with iMovie HD 6. Everytime I export a movie to iWeb, the movie has a ton of audio distortion that sounds like an echo. If I export the movie at full size (DV), no echo. When I play the project in iMovie - no echo. But export as a web streaming video, or directly to iWeb, and tons of audio distortion. Seems to happen for multiple projects. I have not had one that worked normally. HELP!

I don't think that's the problem. Sounds like an iMovie 6 bug to me. I wouldn't exchange an Intel iMac for an iMac G5. The Intel iMac is such much better I'd never take that much of a downgrade.

Bringing in audio over Firewire wouldn't have anything to do with the soundcard. Sounds like a software bug to me. Bring the iMac into a Mac Genius at the Apple store and have them take a look. Or wait for Apple to patch it. I don't think Apple would let a bug that big intentionally get through the system. Maybe a bad install of iLife or a camera conflict with iLife 06?

What?! PPC Macs use sound cards (well, chips, since it's rarely a discreet card), just like Intel Macs.

I think he's talking about 3D audio and stuff which is done on the CPU. Which still doesn't have anything to do with iMovie.

Isn't that more likely just a consequence of the rigourous compression that the Web export does. It has to reduce the file size down from hundreds of MB to tens and one way to help do that is to reduce the sound quality. FWIW, if you do a custom export you can control the degree of compression.

Btw, I don't have '06, just '05, so if the distortion is over and above that you would normally get from the compression...

Yes, the distortion was WAY above normal compression - I am not looking for dolby 5.1 here, the sound was unlistenable. Why do I say 'was'?...the update fixed the problem!

Everyting exports fine now.
