How do I open X11 ?, it's not in my utilities folder, spotlight can't find it and I can't install the version i downloaded from the Apple site, it says "You cannot install X11 on this volume. Newer Software already exists on your computer"

Anyone got any ideas?

Install X11 from the package included on your OS X install CD or DVD.

disc1/xcode tools/utilities/X11SDK.pkg

X11SDK installed but I can't find where.

I think I remember having the same trouble. Is it not possible to install all of the Developer Tools? Maybe that's what you need to do.

Put the OS X install DVD in the drive and open its window. Then scroll down and double-click the "Optional Installs" package. Follow the instructions and when the package selection screen appears, select Applications->X11 and install it. That's it.

I know this is off topic, but what exactly is X11?
I have seen it when installing the OS, but I never check it...

X11 is the windowing environment used on other Unix OSs. Apple X11 allows you to run Unix programs like the GIMP, or alternative window managers like Enlightenment (you can replace Quartz).

I was having trouble installing X11 on my iMac with Tiger. I googled to this web site and it worked just like you said. I registered to MacNN simply to say THANK YOU for taking the time to post this response to another users question.

Anyone got any hints on performance tuning for X11 when running X apps over the internet? I use one to work from home sometimes, but the UI responsiveness is a bit sluggish. I realize it's probably largely because of the bandwidth of a DSL connection vs. whatever they've got at work, but I wonder if there are any other little tricks

Thanks.

It's a program that lets you run applications that were written for Unix like OSs, (typically Linux). It runs in the background, and you don't have to do anything once you have installed it. It just provides the 'stuff' that *NIX programs need to run them under OS X. Peeb
