How long should it take to load iTunes up?
my new core duo seems to take longer than my 4 year old windows pc to load.
the interface loads up but then the colourful wheel spins for about 30 secs.

Do you have an iPod attached, or other external drives? I've found that iTunes waits for external drives to spin up (or at least my 1G iPod, since that's the only external drive I have) before loading completely.

On my Mac mini (1.25GHz) with about 20,000 music files, iTunes needs about 8 seconds till I can start using it. On your iMac, it should be a lot faster.

sounds like theres something wrong then.

I tried removing my library files, to get rid of all my songs, but it still takes ages to load.

party shuffle and videos off (probly doesn't help)
Show links to the music store off.
check for itunes updates off.
Look for shared music off (I think that of been why it was being slow, because i'm on a very slow network.
Look for remote speakers connected with airtunes off.

load time is about 1 seconds now

Edit:

after a little testing it is Check for iTunes updates which was slowing it down.
