My friend is trying to set up his .Mac security certificate and is having problems. He is a full .Mac member and turned on encryption in iChat. We can have encrypted chats. He opened Keychain Access and verified the presence of his certs. He then opened preferences and set it to search for certificates. The problem is that the sign and encrypt buttons don't show up in Mail. Everything worked fine for me, but I did it months ago. Any suggestions?

Why was this moved? It involves three different applications and .Mac. That makes it an OSX question. Why are the mods to trigger happy to move a thread?

I don't recall if you have to do this manually or not, but your friend may need to modify the toolbar in the Mail compose window:

Click the circled menu item and select Customise... to add the items in the rectangle.

The messages can only be signed and encrypted if the sender already has certificates for the e-mail address they are sending to.
