This has only happened in the past day or two. Can anyone verify what it is, and how do I get rid of it?

View Menu -> Hide/Show Status Bar

It's been there since before Safari 1.0

Agreed. Shows me if the page is loading and when you hover over links, you can actually tell where the link will take you as well as tell you if it opens in a new window or not.

I don't like the bar. If I need to know where a link will take me, I drag the link and it shows the entire link.
That's the only reason I need the status bar and that reason is very few and far between.
