A colleague of mine has a nephew who's 13. He wants to start making 3D airplanes and robots and stuff on his computer. I really haven't a clue what software a 13-year-old could wrap his brain around.

Anyone have a suggestion for decent beginning software?

Also, would you recommend 3D modeling or CAD software?

Bryce 5 is tons of fun, and not *too* expensive. It's not really all that suited to modeling stuff like you've described though.

SketchUp <- Fun/intuitive way to produce CAD, very easy to pick up and can produce quite complex results.

It's probably a tad pricey for a 13 yr old but there are substantial education discounts.

Carrara Basics 2 Rocks, its very easy to get into and can produce some fantastic results.

Also comes with lessons to teach you how to model in 3D.
