Hi guys,
I'm new to the mac so apolgies if this is a stupid question. We got a dvd camcorder at christmas
and now that I have my new mbp I want to make some nice stuff with imovie. Problem was that I couldnt read the vob files using quicktime, and as imovie uses quicktime to import the video clips I was at a loss. As such i purchased the mpeg2 pack from the apple store and now I can import the vob files perfectly. However I have no audio. The clips also seem to be shorter in quicktime. Vlc plays them back perfectly.

Is there any codec pack I can download for quicktime to resolve the problem?
Is re-encoding my only option?
Any information is much appreciated.

Get MPEG Streamclip, it's invaluable (and free) when it comes to dealing with MPEG files (of which VOB is a variation).

The problems you're having is due to that Quicktime only reads MPEG-audio in MPEG files, while most VOB-files have either PCM or AC3 audio. With MPEG Streamclip you can easily convert your files to DV (though it might take a while).

DVD camcorders are for people who don't want to do any editing.

MPEG-2 is a presentation format, not designed for editing. Importing MPEG-2 will result in a loss of information if it is re-encoded back to MPEG-2 via iDVD or similar DVD authoring programs.
