Transferring iPhoto Images Laptop to External HD?

	How can I get all of my old images from iPhoto on my laptop (Tiger 10.4.5) to my external HD (Tiger 10.4.5), without erasing the images already on the external HD? I tried dragging all of the 3.5GB of files from the laptop to the external HD, and when I open up iPhoto, none of the images appear. I notice that some of the files have the exact same name, so I can't replace them, or I'll loose all of the images on the external HD. Help!!!
