There are 5 children in my house and dvds are often damaged.

I would like to backup my childrens dvd collection but am having difficulty.

i use MacTheRipper to copy the movie to my hd ... DVD2oneX to shrink the movie to 4GB .

After that i great a burn folder drag the 4gb file in and click burn .. it gets about 1/2 way thru b4 it quits on me .. what am i doing wronge? Are they still encrypted once copied to my hd?

Also if buy dual layer dvds do i still need to shrink my movies and lose the quality?

DVD2oneX can compress then burn, so that's what you should be doing. I think your problem is being caused by the way you're burning.

If you use dual-layer DVDs, there's no reason to compress at all. However, dual-layer blanks are still a bit expensive, so most people accept a little loss in quality for the reduced price.

You say you're dragging the 4GB output file from DVD2oneX and copying that via a burn folder. If you look at the directory structure of a DVD, you'll usually see at least a VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder. I believe that the 4GB file that you're dragging into your burn folder is just a disk image or something similar. Even if that burns successfully, it's not going to create a playable DVD.

Here's how I do mine:

1) Rip the DVD with MacTheRipper.
2) Use Toast 7 to compress the output of MacTheRipper down to single-layer sized. I usually cut out all the extra features and secondary audio tracks so I minimize the amount of compression of the movie. I have Toast 7 save this as a disc image.
3) Mount the disc image and check it with DVD Player to make sure it looks satisfactory.
4) Burn the image to DVD with Toast 7.
