A friend sent me what she thinks is a hilarious video in .wmv format, I have Windows Media Player, Flip4Mac and VLC, but none of them will play it. VLC says it can't play WMV3 type of media. Is this DRM? If not, how do I get this to work?
Thanks

Only Flip4Mac has a chance to play that file, but that should work. Doesn't work with WMV3-files embedded into AVIs, though. Some googling found this which is rumored to be able to transform the AVI to ASF, which is playable in Flip4Mac. I haven't treid ti though.
Some people also resport success by enaming the .avi to .asf and then getting it to run.

I should have mentioned, it is not an .avi file, it is a .wmv file.
Flip4Mac didn't work with it, quicktime comes up and says:
"QuickTime cannot open the file:
"funny.wmv"
it is not a file that Quicktime understands (-2048)"
That is with Flip4Mac.
Windows Media Player opens up a web site saying I need Windows Media 7 (which is weird as I have 9)
VLC says this:
"main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format."
So no go on those three. I did a search of the forum, and it seems that if the file is copy protected, not sure if it is, Flip4Mac won't play it.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks

Currently, any file using the WMV3 codec is not playable on a Mac. As far as I can tell, this is not going to change in the foreseeable future.

No. Flip4Mac and WMP both play WMV3, and flip4mac even claims to play them in avi files (but I haven't had a chance to verify this). What you can't play on mac is any Windows Media file with DRM. This may change when HD DVDs hit the market, as one of the compression standards will be a derivative of WMV3 and will probably have copy protection (and will probably be cracked by an open source project).
