I've been waiting on this for years now. Made numerous requests to Apple all to no avail thus far. This would be so helpful when it comes to accurately organizing music and would eliminate the need for manual playlists to accomplish the same thing. For instance, I'd like to have a Jazz genre with a Straight-Ahead, Big Band, and Smooth Jazz sub-genres. When I'm browsing the library I want to be able to get to all my jazz tunes easily ... or just the Straight-Ahead stuff. The genre section of the library browser could easily support this. Just allow each genre each to open up with the triangle control like it does in the source pane. Am I the only one who wants this?

I am with you on this one. I really don't like having to label some of my music with a generic label when it actually falls under another catagory.

You are not the only one who wants this.

To be fair, I imagine what's stopping them is some kinda constraint imposed by the ID3 tag spec, though I suppose they could just implement sub-genre in iTunes' database instead of in the actual file..

The grouping field (I think that's what it's called) is a good one to use for that--I don't see why you couldn't enter sub-genres there.

That would provide a certain level of functionality when it comes to categorization. However, it would do nothing when it comes to browsing the library. I suppose that's why I would prefer Apple to implement sub-genre properly instead of forcing users to resort to using a field that's designed for grouping movements in classical pieces in a manner that it was never intended to be used.
