Mail not loading recent emails from Gmail

Recently migrated to an iMac G5 from an old ibook G3. Didn't use migration assitant but installed everything on the new machine from scratch.

However I've been having some problems with Mail recently. When I click "Get Mail" the app whirrs into action, I see the spinning wheel icon besides my mailbox, but it doesn't load any new mail. This only happens to Gmail. Yahoo doesn't seem to suffer from this problem. When I log on to Gmail using my web browser I see a ton of new email that Mail has yet to load.

I've deleted the Gmail account in Mail and re-configured it, but now after re-loading mail all the way from beginning of 2005 it suddently stops at the end of 2005, and doesn't load my most recent emails. Any one know what's wrong?
