I cannot get my computer to run under 50-60% cpu when itunes is on. Sometimes its when a song is playing, and sometimes it does it just when idling. The only reason I could see is that I put 2000 songs on it 5 days ago. Since then it won't go down. I have the latest version of itunes, mac os10.4.5, an ibook 1.33ghz with 1.25gb ram (which isn't all being used).
Music shared is not on, sound enhancer isn't on, music store isn't on, the music library isn't being organized, there are 22 smart playlists, radio isn't on, and no ipods are connected. Spotlight is not indexing songs. I do not understand why itunes would take this long to "index" or whatever it is doing to the new songs. Please help.

Check Activity Monitor and see what's actually taking the CPU. If it is iTunes, you may want to redo your library.

It is infact itunes that is taking up the cpu (of course i checked in activity monitor). I did what you said and redid my whole library (some somgs were in folders on a completely different part of my computer) I even reinstalled macosx. None of this has worked. Maybe you know a techie reason that I would not think of for this problem. It is really frustrating.

Latest iTunes version?

But if you reinstalled OS X, this problem is really weird.

Check if you have the 'Sound Enhancer' option enabled, (it likes to eat CPU) go to Preferences -> Playback

Another CPU eater could be the Equalizer, command+2, check that also.
