I was having terrible slowdowns while using Safari - endless busy cursors, slow page loads.
AT&T has a special going if you order DSL online and you have an existing (or you order a new) landline from them, $12.99USD/mo. for 12 months and a $50 rebate for the DSL modem (I know it's not really a modem but that's what it's called).
I couldn't resist the price (vs. $44.95/mo. for Earthlink cable broadband which is what I had through Time Warner Cable).
Safari loads pages in a snap. No busy cursors.
I had earlier tried to reinstall Safari, empty the Safari cache, reset Safari, repair disk, repair permissions. Nothing worked. I even did a complete re-install of Tiger.
And the download speed is faster than cable. I think the network segment I was on was saturated with too many other cable users. That's one thing about DSL to remember - I don't share the line with anyone all the way back to the local switching station.
I never thought that DSL would be any good but this experience just goes to show that pre-conceived notions are often incorrect.
As a side benefit, my cable bill has dropped considerably! Paying less to the cable company is a good thing. If I could see the DirecTV satellites, I would drop cable TV in a minute but no can do.
