My Mac POP email account now asking for passwords???

I have had my system up and running for over six months. No major problems. Now, all of a sudden, a little mail window pops up on my screen asking me to enter my password. If I enter one it goes away and comes back in a few hours asking for the same information. If I just click cancel the same. Does anyone have any ideas what got corrupted and how I fix it?
