My Excel Problem - Cells text format won't hold -

I'm Formatting a spreadsheet. Using excel 2004 on tiget 10.4.5. All works OK except there is a column that I want to put text in and even when I format the column using Format>Cells>Number>text The text won't stay in the cells and I get ths message.

It's driving me nuts. Any Help.
