My work is currently converting MPEG 2 clips from a camcorder to AVI's to be used in some PC app.

They are having one hell of a time getting it all to work properly (they are on PC's) and I would like to offer them a Mac alternative.

I had a quick look in iMovie and it didn't seem to allow AVI exports, the tech specs on Final Cut's "converter" app does seem to allow it either.

Is there a quick and easy mac solution to converting mass amounts of MPEG2's to AVI's?

Why use AVI when you could just use QuickTime?

But anyway, use Flip4Mac, they sell a Windows Media export component for QuickTime. That's the only way to create Windows Media files on a Mac.

When I want to convert from DVD to AVI I usually use ffmpegX.

The key question is what quality do they want? For what purpose is it? Editing, re-compressing or just playback?

I thought Cleaner could create asf files.

Anyway, for compatibility nothing beats MPEG-1. You'll still get tech support calls on macs and even some on windows if you use avi (with any decent codec), but MPEG-1 works everywhere.

But it all depends on what "AVI's to be used in some PC app" means. For example, if size is no issue since the unnamed "PC app" will be reprocessing the files anyway, use uncompressed avi (QT Amateur).

The only reason it HAS to be AVI's is because the capture software they MUST use on a PC only accepts AVI's.
