Hi All,
In my podcasts window in iTunes, I often have exclamation marks to the left of the podcast title. I've figured out what all the other icons that appear there mean, but I don't know what the exclamation marks mean (and I can't find a reference in the iTunes help app).
Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
Thanks in advance,
Chas

An exclamation point to the left of a song means it can't find the original file. This is because the original file was deleted from the Finder which means iTunes can't update it's index properly, thus it still thinks the file is there.
I just tested that theory regarding podcasts. Same thing.

Cool, thanks for the help.
Hmm, I wonder how I've lost so many files? I've used iTunes to delete podcasts I've already listened to, but I haven't messed with anything podcast-related in the Finder.
I'm going to try to unsubscribe and then resubscribe to a podcast and see if that solves the problem. If it does, then I've got 21 podcasts to resubscribe to <arrgh>
Thanks again,
Chas

Regarding to podcast, it can also mean that the podcast could not be downloaded due, probably, to a problem with the server hosting the file. It can happen when the podcast episode is recently released and the server is getting hammered with requests, or if the feed is bad (maybe linking to a non existant file).

Click on the exclamation mark. It will show you the error.
The most common (non-error) reason for it is when you have not played a podcast for a while. If you don't watch more than about 5 in a row, it will stop downloading and give you that error until you tell it to continue.

All useful answers, thanks everyone.
PurpleGiant, you hit the nail on the head! I didn't know I could click on that particular icon, but when I did I got a message that I hadn't listened to those particular podcasts for a while.
Clever system, this avoids unnecessary use of bandwidth without being too inconvenient for the end user.
Chas
