I am trying to access some online content - here's the link:

mms://media1.ccphilly.org/teaching/guestspeakers/chuckmissler/PC060164.mp3

Windows Media immediately opens, but I keep receiving the follolwing error message: "The channel does not support the stream format."

Anybody have any ideas as to why it won't work on my Mac? I've tried it with both Safari and Firefox. Do you think they encoded it to only work with Windows Media Player 10, which isn't available for the Mac?

It's an MP3 stream, not Windows Media. Windows Media Player for Mac supports ONLY Windows Media files, not MP3, MPEG, etc. Open it with QuickTime Player, which does support MP3.

You should be able to use RCDefaultApp (or the Protocol Helpers pane in Internet Explorer's preferences) to set the helper for the mms protocol to QuickTime instead of Windows Media Player.

You should also consider ditching Windows Media Player altogether and using Flip4Mac instead, which will let QuickTime play Windows Media files.

I'm not sure that Quicktime can handle mms streams.
Anyway, I'm mimms to download the mp3 for you. I'll let you know when it's ready to download.

Thanks for recommending the RCDefaultApp, it's neat! I was able to install it and successfully set the helper for QT, however now (when I click on the audio link), I am receiving this error message:
"QuickTime cannot open the URL: "PC060164.mp3" a necessary data reference could not be resolved (-2000)"

I did switch to Flip4Mac for a time, and it worked wonderfully, but when I would forward the video clips on (after viewing them in Flip4Mac), none of my friends who use PC's could open the file. It became a pain, so I dumped it and went back to WMP (as much I personally regret using it).

Change mms:// to http://

Opens in Safari using QT plugin.

On mine (in both Safari & Firefox) even after changing the beginnning to http:// - it still automatically opens Windows Media Player and gives me an error message. Weird (and frustrating).

I must have a browser setting off or something. When I click on the above link, WMP automatically opens, but now the error message is: The playlist format is not recognized.

At the top of my browser (my default is Firefox) it says: PC060164.mp3 (video/x-ms-asf Object)

Does that mean anything to anyone?

(Sincere appreciation for everyone's continued efforts at helping me troubleshoot this.)

You are right. It seems like the server sends mp3 with the wrong MIME-type. It opens in Filp4Mac for me (I mistook this for QuickTime). That explains why it opens in Windows Media Player on your machine since you don't have Flip4Mac installed.

Actually, despite the extension, that is a WMA file, not an mp3. I downloaded the file and am converting it to mp3 for you, using iTunes for Windows.

Buck_W, you don't have PMs enabled; so email me at mithras.the.prophet, which is a gmail account, to get a link to download the converted mp3.

I have Flip4Mac installed also. It IS in fact using QT as Flip4Mac is a QT plug-in.

Before posting, I tested that URL in QuickTime by cut and pasting it into QuickTime Player's Open URL dialog. (Flip4Mac is installed.)

It connected and played without incidence. The Movie Info window says the format is "Microsoft MPEG Layer 3".

I went ahead and reinstalled Flip4Mac and now all the files will play. But now that Flip4Mac is installed, I will have to figure out why none of the WM video files (that I forward) will play on my friends' PC's.

If you save the files locally and then forward them, they are no longer WMV files. Your PC friends would have to use QT. Just forward them the link to the original files. That is what I've been able to do (I have QT Pro if that makes any difference).

Not true. From the plug-in's pop-up menu just select "Save source material" or whatever the command is called and it is saved as whatever it is. No conversion or anything is done.

If you open the file in VLC, it plays. But Safari downloads it as an mp3.asf.
