I'm looking for an app that I can set to boot me off the interent after a certain amount of time, or that will somehow remind/warn me that I've been on the internet after x amount of minutes. Back in the days of dial-up, I could set the internet prefs to disconnect after x number of minutes, but with a high speed, always on, airport connection, I've lost that ability.

I did a search of the forums, but only found something that would allow me to restrict my computer to certain web sites, which is not what I'm looking for.

Has anyone heard od anything like I'm looking for?

If you have the knowlege, you can probably write a short apple script to turn off airport, and have it run at a certain time. I wouldn't know how to do such a thing, just an idea incase you do

Or you could work on developing self-discipline. No need for any software and the skill just might come in handy for other areas in your life.

Thanks for the smart-ass answer! If self-discipline alone would solve the problem, I would have stuck with that. Apparently is hasn't, hence my post here.

Will Safari/firefox/opera/ie run off of a flash drive? If I were to copy the app to a removeable storage device, would I be able to use any of the above on my mac, running directly off the flash drive?

I know where you're coming from, since I tend to waste a lot of time online. But any solution you come up with will probably be defeatable by you, so I'm not sure how useful it would be. Even your example of having internet connect cut you off after X number of minutes wouldn't do anything if you decided to just log back on. So I'm wondering if some kind of timer application would do the trick. Something that could have a countdown and/or tally up the total amount of time you've spent online for the day/week/month/year. Ultimately, you do still have to control yourself, but that might help you do so.

Thanks for the helpful replies. In the end, I think that lcuise is right. I do think I stumbled upon a solution though. I downloaded a portable version of firefox onto a jump drive & then deleted firefox, IE, opera & Safari from my mac. Now the only web browser I have is on external media. If I want to use it, I can, but I can also leave it at home/work/ with my wife/ in the car, etc. This way I have another layer of work between myself & wasting time on the net. We'll see how it works. Thanks for the replies.

If you have a Linksys router, you can have it "cut you off" during certain days/times. It's under settings for your router.

Mac Minder (http://www.lumacode.com/macminder/) is another option. It's $29.95 but works well for monitoring/regulating usage of whatever programs you want. Of course, you can find ways to circumvent it, so you still need some self-discipline.
