My Requirements:

Inputs: QT movies, (and Windows equivalent if possible); DV out from a camera; video from a DVD of transcribed 8 mm cine file. QT, AIFF, AVI and MP3 sound clips.
Outputs: QT movie (and Windows equivalent if posible). Format capable of sending to Toast 7 to burn a DVD. PAL and NTSC formats.

Features: Split, delete, move, join (and superimpose if possible) sections of video and audio. Transitions between clips (cross fades, fade in/out, wipes), titles (static, scrolling, sort of thing). Animation not required.

G5/2.0 MHz, OS 10.3.9. 1 GB RAM, 70 GB free on HD.

Would it suit me please?

Thanks

iMovie would actually do quite fine for that. A more detailed comparison chart is available on the Apple website here ----- http://www.apple.com/finalcut/index.html

I have tried iMovie and don't like it much.

An important question before I take the plunge with FCE:

Will it accept videos in QT (.mov) form, and will it export my edited movie in that form?

Thanks.

Yes, FCE imports and outputs .mov files. There are many settings to choose from when you are outputting a .mov file even...
