quick questions: how does aperture handle files?

who knows how aperture handles files? like i mean does it make copies of images from iphoto or just umm reference the files when importing from iphoto? if images imported from iphoto are deleted from aperture are they also deleted from iphoto as well?

Macbook Pro: 17in, 2.16Ghz, 120GB HD, 1.5 GB ram.
iBook G4: 1.07Ghz, 60GB HD, 756mb ram (on sale for parts)

It copies when importing from iPhoto. iPhoto's copies are untouched.
