there used to be a great utility called speedometer for the mac in the classic days , is there something similar for os-x ?

Don't mean to sound "snarky" here, but you could start by explaining what "Speedometer" did.

it used to run your mac through loads of tests and then let you compare it in speed to another one

i used to have lots of fun with it with my old quadra

i realise xbench is vaguely similar
