Hi there.

I sometimes get correspondences from my cousins to watch some Windoze videos. Unforunately, it's all broadcast/formatted on a webpage geared towards Windoze Media. I was wondering, what software/plugins, etc. do I need to install top read such files (for example, those ".asx" or ".asxp" files)? I know there's "Flip4Mac" but, if it works as an option, how do I configure it to read the various Windoze videos formats. I'd also like to know, in addition to Flip4Mac, what else is there as well.

Flip4Mac installs some Safari plug-ins, among other things like the codecs, that allow most sites to think that you have Media Player installed.

I haven't had problems with embedded streaming Windows video since installing it.

Well, i must be missing something because every time i try to watch something that's in WMP format, WMP will open but, I keep getting the "Error Creating Unique '.tmp' File" alert box and the media won't play.

It really is a shame that Mac users are marginalized in this way.

You should get rid of WMP. You don't need it if you have Flip4Mac.

People are giving you poor advice in this thread, but the reason for that is you're asking poor questions. You need to link to a specific file that's giving you trouble so we can tell you for sure if it should be working, and you need to contact flip4mac's tech support because clearly you're doing something with their product that's causing it not to work as designed.

It may be that the wmv files are copy protected, in which case there's no way to play them in Mac OS.

That file will not play in either Flip4Mac or Windows Media Player.

There is a link for a RealPlayer version of the file which plays just fine.

But that's just because the file doesn't use proper ASX code to tell WMP what to do. If you download the file and open it in TextEdit you can see the mms-url to the stream (which does open for me in WMP):
mms://media3.abc.net.au/foreign/2006/turkey_pamuk_200k.wmv

That files plays back great on my Mac with Windows Media Player. Maybe you need to re-install the latest version?

It plays fine in QT with flip4mac too, if you use "open url"

It's just a metafile that points to another windows media file (open one in a text editor and see for yourself). Although sometimes you see actual files named asx because the apps that play it are not dependent on file name extensions (like QT is for some ridiculous reason), so people name it wrong, see that it works anyway, and think they've guessed the right thing.
