Recently, within the past several weeks, something strange has been happening with Firefox. Windows are freezing, and I have to open up a new window ..... Here is what happens. I'll have a window open, and be reading something online. Then when I need to type in something, like a response to a forum, that window is frozen, and I can't type anything at all. I have to close that frozen window, and open up a new window, then I can pick up where I left off.
This happens everyday, and appears to only be a problem with Firefox. I have the newest version of Firefox, 1.5.0.2, which just updated automatically several days ago. Has anyone else noticed this same problem? Is there a fix?
I'm running Tiger 10.4.6 on my iBook G4. Any ideas? Thanks.

I get that after using a site for my school that has poorly coded Java. Does this tend to happen for you after visiting certain sites?

Windows freezing in Firefox happens with many different webpages. In fact, I just remembered that this freezing also happened with Nvu, while I was working on editing my webpages. Could there be a problem with the system (OS X 10.4.6)?

Have you tried any other browsers?
I haven't had this problem, but I just switched to mac and didn't use firefox for very long before switching to camino. In the week or two that I did use firefox, it didn't have any such bugs (it was just too slow on launch, which is why I switched to camino).

Yep, I get that too. Methinks it has to do with a memory leak, something that's plagued Firefox for years.
It got SO annoying in recent weeks (I had to quit Firefox repeatedly during the day even though I only browsed a single window and no tabs) that I just ported my bookmarks over to Safari and Firefox has become my backup browser as of this week.

Im having the same problem in 1.5.0.3 on my little g4 ibook running 10.4.6. it was fine up until last night, and now whenever I try to load a new tab or enter something into a text field, I get the stupid beachball. it goes away after a few minutes, but it's still really annoying.
I cleared my download pane, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I can empty/clear to make the app run faster. something has to be bogging it down... I tried reinstalling (stupid windows tactic) and it didn't work.

Reinstalling wouldn't do anything since user settings are saved in your home folder, not the application. Try deleting your profile (in ~/Library/Application Support).

I haven't seen this at all with Firefox on either MacOS or Windows. Can anyone say anything more detailed than "window freeze" about this issue? Is everyone using the latest version of Firefox?

Keep in mind that by "window freeze" the original poster meant that the window would stop accepting keyboard input. My issue with my school's website was clearly Java-related, and it has since been fixed either on their end, or by me upgrading to the latest Java embedding plugin. I don't know if juusan is really talking about the same issue. I am using FF1.5.0.3.
A quick note for people who might be experiencing Java problems in Firefox: Try upgrading your Java embedding plugin. Get the latest nightly version, and put it inside Firefox: Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/plugins
If you don't replace the older version here, then both versions show up in about :plugins, and I don't know if the correct one is actually used.

I experience a freeze when I click on the "Vatican: Da Vinci Code remains unpunished." thread, right here on MacNN.
I thought that maybe God didn't want me to read it.
