This is basically what I want to do. I have the old iPod with the orange buttons on it, and its only 15GB. I have about 17GB worth of songs..and a computer with a capacity of 250GB. So basically, is there a way that I can select a certain songs in iTunes..and have them NOT UPLOAD to my iPod when I plug it in. Thanks for the information and if you can help that would be great. I can imagine I am not the first to want to do this.

One way is to use the "Only update checked songs" checkbox in iTunes -> Preferences -> iPod. Then, in the library, don't check the songs you don't want copied.

Make a new playlist that contains only what you want on the iPod. Set the iPod to only automatically update from that particular playlist.

You could also do multiple playlists this way. Maybe make one that replicates your Library as far as songs to be on your iPod, and then a series of playlists that you set to sync with the pod via iTunes.

There are a lot of ways to do this with smart playlists. My current method is to use the Grouping section of the tag to populate a playlist that gets synchronized to my iPod.
