Ok, so for general use, aperture works fine, i can upload modify, and do everything i need to on my g5.

however, when i tried to upload a number of images to an gallery on the iweb page im working on ( which also gives me problems ) it will get about halfway through processing then kill the power on the g5 and instantly shuts off. this happened 6 times today.

and i notice it isnt just aperture, anytime the g5 gets under a load ( be it photoshop, or even iphoto! ) it will just shut off after about a minute or so.

does anyone have any idea why this happens?

Sounds like there could be some issue's with the cooling system in your G5. IIRC, the 2.7s are water cooled, which isn't particually reliable. With a machine of that value I assume you bought AppleCare (not trying to be snooty by saying that!), so give Apple a call, as I doubt it is something you will be able to fix via software.

Edit: btw, your sig is way too long. Thought I'd let you know before the mods catch ya

fixed. thanks for the heads up.

i will call apple and talk with them about that then. i had thought it was a cooling issue as well, so i would watch my guages, and it would heat up to about 130deg. Farenheit then kill it.

130 F?!?! On the Apple site, under powermac specs, it says that max operating temp should be 95F. I would advise you immediatly stop using your powermac, and just use your powerbook until this problem is fixed, or else you may cause serious damage to your system

Edit: Strike that, just realised that what they actually mean by that is that the air temp should be no more than 95F when using the PM, not that the mac should get no hotter than 95F. Sorry! Still, call apple.

update: took my G5 to the apple store today to have them check it out, apparently because i purchased 3rd party ram ( who wouldnt?! ) from Other world computing ( macsales.com ) i may have a faulty chip or something. they are doing stress tests right now and ill have it back by tonight or tomorrow.

what he was saying makes sense though, because under n ormal day to day operation it works fine, but when it has to undertake a heavy operation load it suddenly bugs out.

which means that when its only acessing some of the ram, it works great, but when it tries to grab all 6.5GB there might be a bad piece that causes the computer to shut down.

which if that is the case i imagine all i have to do is call OWC and have them replace the faulty one. ( they have a lifetime warranty, thank god! )

and if it turns out to be a cooling problem from apple's side of the park, then they will repair it free of charge.
