Why does Safari suck at Flash?

The one thing that pisses me off about Safari is the behavior with Flash.

1) Whenever a window with flash playing loses focus the video slows down but the audio still plays at normal rate and the movie gets out of sync.
2) If you load a new tab and go to it, the flash won't play in the background like .mp3 files and .mov files etc - it will just stop completely.

This makes sites like Youtube.com a pain when multi-tasking. Camino does this just fine, so I doubt it is a problem with the Flash player. Is there a hidden preference or something I can do to change this stupid behavior?
